I have a LiDE 30 scanner, which is actually a fairly recent acquisition. It's a nice scanner, in particular because it is entirely powered by USB, and so doesn't need a separate power supply.
A few days ago I tried to get it to work on my Mac, which I assumed wouldn't be difficult. I think I burned about 30 minutes on it total before giving it up as a bad job. There were a variety of different packages that claimed to do it, but none of them seemed to do much of anything, and none of them successfully recognized the scanner.
Anybody know of something that will get this working? It's one of the new Intel Macs, and this actually seems to be the problem. I vaguely remember getting it to work on my pre-Intel Mac, but I just can't remember for certain.
Hey Rich,
I've got a LiDE 20, and I never got it working well with my Intel Mac. The only way I can use it is in Photoshop -- I tried unsuccessfully for over an hour with twain and OS X's built-in "Image Capture" app. Also, I have to run Photoshop CS3 in Rosetta mode, or the capture doesn't work at all.
One thing to notice -- the Canon drivers add some junk to your login items, which continuously poll USB devices, and fill up your console/system logs. I can't remember the names, but they're just a bunch of numbers. All they do is monitor for hardware button pushes, so I just removed them.
Pretty frustrating, because the scanner itself is great, but the driver support is pathetic.
A quick search only turned up information on the "latest" drivers, which are from 2002 -- not too recent, to be sure.
In fact, I stumbled across a blogger (http://rentzsch.com/suck/canonLiDE30Scanner) who purchased the same scanner from an Apple Store and ended up returning it. The blogger does of good job of giving a technical review of the experience.
Sorry, but it looks like it's not something that is very well supported on a Mac. Maybe YOU should write drivers for it.
Hello
We have an Art Dept. who have just bought 30 new Intel iMacs. I can't get the bunch of Lide30s working on them or older intel mac book pro. However I'm interested by the chap who can use his Lide 20 via Photoshop even is Roseta is the order of the day. Can you explain how you are making it work in Photoshop CS3 do I need to place any magical files in any magical places to make this work as in my CS3 nothing jumps out saying "Use your scanner here"
Cheers for any advice. I too have spent three+ hours trying various driver concoctions and toolboxes.... none of them ever working.
M
ps Yes I've tried running CS3 under Rosetta that still isn't pushing out any option to me screaming... me me click me ?
I don't know you but stumbled upon your blog whilst googling about same problem. It seems like Adobe have changed something in CS3 when they implemented the intel update that doesn't like the Lide 20's drivers. Even forcing it to run under rosetta doesn't help.
I personally never liked the canon software anyway, even when I was using windows before I got my imac. Try Vuescans software instead. It is unfortunately a stand alone programme, but it recognises 99% of scanners and the quality is so much better than the canon supplied software can produce.
I have the same problem as well and I've been using the scanner with VueScan: http://www.hamrick.com/
It is extremely irritating that we would have to purchase software for something that should be supported, but alas that is the only solution for now other than running photoshop under rosetta.
hi – yeah this is all a pain in the arse.
I've a Canon LiDE 60 and INtel iMac. Been scanning thru Photoshop running under Rosetta. Seems to have been cause of Photoshop problems – running slow and crashing. Now no Rosetta and way faster.
Anyhoo, just DLed ScanGear Starter CS 11.1 from this site
http://www.usa.canon.com
and seems to be working nicely :)
Can scan thru Photoshop or just fire up the ScanGear app on its own.
Try this driver from Canon
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=OSCompatibilityAct∨
1. Download the dmg lide30osx7011en.dmg
2. Install the driver (ScanGear CS 7.0X) to /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/Import:Export
3. Update PS to use Rosetta
4. Started PH
5. File -> import and walla.
Sam,
Sure, if I had PhotoShop. Alas, I can't afford a $300 piece of software just to scan in mainly-text documents.
Ah - Sorry about that. BTW, the URL above broken (http://tinyurl.com/2679cp) there it is.
fwiw you can find a program on canon that should scan to PDF and let you choose a program if you want to do a jpg (although I can't seem to figure that out).
From the url above, select Max Os X. Under Software, download "CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.0X (Mac OS X)". After installing, you'll need to copy the plugin to the new area.

My wife has a Mac G4 cube that was running OSX 10.4.11, PhotoShop 7 and the Canon LiDE 30 scanner. The scanner was working fine with PhotoShop.
I got her a new Mac mini, running OSX 10.5.2. I downloaded lide30osx7011en.dmg from Canon, as mentioned above, and I am able to use the CanoScan Toolbox X application to scan and save as jpeg (or other formats, such as tiff).
PhotoShop 7 is not compatible with the new machine, so I upgraded to CS3 v10. Once installed, it almost immediately notified me of an upgrade to 10.1, which I ran. I copied the scanner driver to PhotoShop, as described above. When I start PhotoShop, it displays the message, "One or more plug-ins are currently not available on your system. For details, see Help > System Info." I've copied the text from System Info here:

Ed,
Dummy's guide. Close Photoshop. Search in Applications. Find the Photoshop icon in the Photoshop folder. "Get Info" with Apple
It will slow Photoshop down slightly but the scanner driver should work (my CanoScan Lide 20 now does). If you're not scanning you can uncheck the Rosetta box.
David
Somehow this info fell out of my last post... After get info, check the 'open using rosetta' box then run Photoshop.
I think I've sorted it out!!!!
After months of this bugging me I thought I'd give it one more shot, I hate running Photoshop CS3 in Rosetta because it is much slower. Now FINALLY I've got the Scan Gear toolbox to work! So I don't need to run Photoshop in Rosetta mode to be able to scan (before I used to restart computer using boot camp into Windows Vista just to be able to scan).
Ok here is what I did.. I did a few different things before I realised it worked. The order might be important!?!!
I installed the scan gear tool box software.
Then I downloaded from http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/index.asp (THE UK SITE) the ScanGear file Version 7.0.1.0
Released on 18-09-2003
Installed that into the macHD directory
and now I can can through the ToolBox (but still not photoshop)
You downloaded 7.0.1.0...
NOT 7.0.1.0X
correct?
David, or someone. I can't get the CanoScan Lide 20 work on my MacBook is 10.5.2 Operating System.
Can any one help me please.
thanks.
Chuas
So I'm so close I can taste it, I went to the UK site and I downloaded the scangear 7.0.1.0 package but my mac sees this program as a .bin quicktime file and can't open it. any suggestions?
cntrl click on it and open it with stuffit expander. Archive Utility is set as the default decompressor on new macs and it can't handle some form of compression.
HOW TO SET UP CANON LIDE 30 on Mac OSX 10.5 intel machines.
Step 1:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct?
Step 2
THEN SELECT MAC OS X
Step 3
THEN DOWNLOAD BOTH:
LiDE 30 Scanner Driver Ver. 7.0.1.1X
Mac OS X
lide30osx7011en.dmg
CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.0X
Mac OS X
CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz
Step 4
INSTALL CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.1.3.0X
Step 5
INSTALL LiDE 30 Scanner Driver Ver. 7.0.1.1X . Make sure Applications>CanoScan Toolbox 4.1>Plug-Ins is selected as the install location.
Step 6
YOU WILL BE ASKED TO RESTART. RESTART.
Step 7
When you run CanoScan you can choose Photoshop as the default program to open the image in once it has scanned. You do not need Photoshop to open using Rosetta for this to work.
NOTE: If you want to scan directly from within Photoshop CS3, you need to copy the driver 'ScanGear CS 7.0X' which is found in Applications>CanoScan Toolbox 4.1>Plug-Ins into the photoshop pluggins folder, Applications> Adobe Photoshop CS3>Plug-Ins>Import/Export. You also need to open photoshop in Rosetta mode. Apple + I on the photoshop icon and select 'Open using Rosetta'. I would not recommend using this method though.
Step 8
Go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and remove both of the following:
N067U_ButtonManager.app
N124U_ButtonManager.app
Step 9
Scan...
Thanks for this, works perfectly. Scoured the web for a solution and this is it!
Still, any solution for lide 20 and Imac?
Yes I have it working too now through CanoScan Toolbox X. (Lide 20 on a MacBook 10.5.4...thanks Step by Step Guide.
I have been using the CanoScan 967OU for a couple years with an Intel Mac and it has been really annoying, but not enough to buy a new scanner! Running ScanGear CS only works in Photoshop if I am using Rosetta.
Using Photoshop CS3 with Rosetta causes my intel Mac to crash quite a bit. I installed more memory and it still crashes when saving scanned images.
Is there a different software I can use with this scanner that works with PS CS3 on intel mac's?
If I do go out and buy a new scanner, it will be one that can make larger scans, does anyone know of a reasonably priced Tabloid or A2 scanner that works on intel macs with cs3?
Thanks!
works for me on intel mac with that :

First off, thanks so much for the step by step guide. I had to try it several times to get it right because setting the folder correctly was not intuitive, but it finally worked. Also got a lock switch error I had to work through to also get it working (even though the scanner wasn't locked). In any case, I am new to Mac and have to say that I have been very frustrated with many of the operating system "features". It is not at all intuitive. Windows may not be flexible, but for the most part it works with most software and hardware. When you install an application, it actually works without having to jump through hoops, find the right driver, manually copy files, make sure its in the right folder with no guidance as to where to put it offered by the manufacturer or Apple. I find that Mac is poorly supported even today. I thought it was supposed to be easier. Anyway, it has been over a month since I was able to use my scanner and I thank you for providing a solution that actually works. Hallelujah!!!

hi - trying to get my recently acquired MacBook pro to scan with Epson printer. trying to run CS 3 in Rosetta mode but the box is not checkable! how do i make it so i can check the box? i see it, but....
any help is much appreciated
thanks
With respect, all of the foregoing is bogus. On 10.5.6 Intel neither the driver nor the Toolbox will install due to access or permissions errors.
"Cannot access a file names "N076U_Library.shlb". (Error Code =-5000)"
"Error creating file.
1008:5, -5000 Access denied error."
This happens even if running with "su open"
Planned obsolescence. Canon is crap.
